Sure, we’ve all heard the over-the-top hype about the new slippery-fast 5G wireless standard. Although it’s not available yet, tests by some large carriers show promise. Now the bad news – the soonest it will likely be available to consumers is sometime in 2020.
Still, the manner in which it will become available may surprise you: Google and some of the major wireless carriers will likely use it to provide broadband to your office or home. Expect to be presented with speeds of 1GB or more, all without the need to install fiber.
Google, Verizon, and AT&T are all working on fixed wireless deployments even as the 5G standard is not yet fully baked. All the major players are aligning under a vision of base stations attached to existing poles with broadband connections, effectively beaming a 5G signal directly into nearby homes and offices.
